Semiahmoo Closure To Have Big Impact On Local Economy

BLAINE, Wash. -- The announced closure of the Semiahmoo Hotel in Blaine will have a big financial impact on the city and Whatcom County.

Blaine City Manager Gary Tomsic says the greatest loss is the 200 jobs, most of which belong to local people who support the local economy.

Harry Chesnin with the upper Skagit Tribe, part owner of the hotel, says the employees will still get paid for the next 60 days.

The resort is Blaine’s largest employer, and also its biggest utility buyer and generator of sales tax, hotel/motel tax, and property tax.

Those taxes and utility purchases brought in nearly a million dollars a year for Blaine.

Tomsic says the city is preparing a new budget, but is hopeful that the hotel will be sold and stay in business.
