Light Bulb Recycling Program Begins January 1

OLYMPIA, Wash. (Metro) -- The Washington State Department of Ecology adopts its final rules for the Mercury-Containing Lights Product Stewardship Program, which was created under a 2010 state law.

The program provides for safe disposal and recycling of fluorescent light bulbs, which are energy-efficient but contain mercury and are dangerous when broken.

Under the program, collection, transport, and recycling of burned-out residential fluorescent lights will start on January 1st.

Throwing such lights in the trash after that date will be illegal.
