Border Patrol No Longer Acting As Translators

WHATCOM, Wash. -- Local cops who need language translation on their beats can no longer rely on U.S. Border Agents.

The Department of Homeland Security publicly announced this week that police officers in border communities in need of interpretation services at calls or during traffic stops must look elsewhere.

The U.S. Border Patrol has faced criticism from immigrant rights groups for the routine practice which can often result in questions about immigration status.

Northwest Immigrants Rights Project Executive Director Jorge Baron.

The mandate will now require local police forces to seek interpretation help from private agencies.

Lynden Police Chief Jack Foster also says that while border guards are no longer allowed to act as interpreters for police, agents are still able to respond to general backup calls.
