The local jobless rate rose to 6.5-percent in November, up from 6.3-percent in October, according to the latest numbers from the State Employment Security Department.
Elizabeth Court with the Employment Security Department says many of Whatcom County workers have jobs in other counties, but when they get laid off, they get counted as unemployed here where they live.
Despite the slight increase, Whatcom County's jobless rate is still more than a full percentage point lower than the statewide average.
Washington's unemployment rate dropped to 7.8-percent in November, from a seasonally-adjusted 8.2-percent in October.
