SEATTLE, Wash. (Metro) -- A new report says a lithium ion battery like the ones now causing problems in Boeing 787 Dreamliners blew up in a lab test in Arizona in 2006, starting a fire that destroyed the lab building.
The Seattle Times says Boeing engineers found an energy containment problem and the Federal Aviation Administration later approved, with conditions, a plan for controlling it.
The report also says the Airline Pilots Association brought the matter up with the FAA during the 787 certification process.
