Olympia, Wash. -- The State Senate held public hearings last week on three proposed constitutional amendments that would require two-thirds of lawmakers to approve any tax increases.
Voters in Washington have enacted or affirmed a supermajority vote requirement five times over the past 20 years - most recently in 2012.
But Jason Mercier with the Washington Policy Center says the state constitution currently only protects voter initiatives for two years.

The Senate Ways and Means Committee has upcoming public hearings on Valentine's Day for various tax increase bills. If all the bills were adopted, the projected 10-year tax increase would exceed $38 billion.
One of the proposed bills would create a statewide tax on plastic shopping bags, which are now banned in Bellingham.
