The Whatcom County Auditor’s office reports 52-percent of votes counted as of last night support forming the “Chuckanut Community Forest Park District”.
Five park District Commissioner positions also on the ballot are contingent on voters approving the district proposal.
Candidates Cathy McKenzie, John Hymas, Susan Kaun, Vince Biciunas and John Brown lead in those races.
The district is designed to hike property taxes inside its boundaries to raise the $3.2 million needed to repay money the city borrowed from a different parks fund.
That money was part of the $8.2 million the city spent buying the Chuckanut Ridge Property in 2011 to protect it from development.
