Washington Salmonella Cases Cause For Alert

Washington State -- A recent outbreak of salmonella cases has State Health Officials on alert.

The Washington Department of Health is warning people about potential dangers when consuming poultry.

Officials confirm that 56 people in Washington became sick with the salmonella “Heidelberg” strain in 2012.

All cases were linked to Foster Farm Chicken produced in plants here and in and California.

Donn Moyer with the State Department of Health says most poultry can contain salmonella bacteria.

To avoid getting sick, he recommends storing poultry separately from other foods.

He also says poultry should be completely thawed before use and cooked at 165-degrees Fahrenheit.

Officials confirm no deaths have been attributed to the outbreak.
