Sheriff Says Deputy's Termination Was Not Political

Whatcom County, Wash. -- Whatcom County’s Sheriff says he was justified in firing his former deputy last summer.

Paul Murphy recently filed a case against Sheriff Bill Elfo citing wrongful termination.

Elfo says his dismissal had nothing to do with politics and that he primarily let Murphy go because of his involvement with a missing county computer hard drive.

Murphy’s case alleges Elfo used county resources during his 2010 re-election campaign to secretly spy on and weed out dissidents within the department.

Elfo also says Murphy was dismissed because he compromised his credibility by providing conflicting information about the whereabouts of the hard drive and was oftentimes insubordinate.

The Sheriff says Murphy had the opportunity to seek county arbitration for possible job reinstatement, but refused.  Elfo has yet to be served papers.
