Lawmakers Push Protection For San Juan Islands

San Jaun Islands, Wash. -- Congressman Rick Larsen and other Northwest Democratic lawmakers are calling for the protection of federal land in the San Juan Islands from future development.

The 2nd District Representative, along with Senators Cantwell, Murray and 1st District Congresswoman DelBene, recently proposed legislation that would make close to 1,000 acres in the San Juans a national conservation area.

The legislation is part of a so-called “dual-track approach” that includes getting President Obama and outgoing Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar to designate the land as a national monument.

Larsen says the designations would mean minimal costs to the Bureau of Land Management.

He also says if national monument status is achieved, a management plan could be put into place that would get the local community involved in its upkeep.
