SUMAS, Wash. -- The City of Sumas is asking Washington Governor Christine Gregoire to oppose a gravel mine in Abbottsford B.C., because Sumas officials fear it threatens their water supply.
The general manager of the operation told The Abbottsford News, “This is the kind of misinformation that goes out there,” saying Sumas is acting on poor information as it opposes the new 85-acre gravel pit.
The proposed mine could impact its aquifer, according to a Sumas official.
Sumas utility superintendent Rod Fadden told the Abbotsford paper that taking out natural, clean gravel and replacing it with construction debris could poison the water.
The B.C. company said it has already been mining 30 acres adjacent to the new site, and has encountered no issues.
Much of the fill it uses comes from deep holes and not demolition sites, according to the company.
