BLAINE, Wash. -- A British Columbia woman has been jailed for allegedly trying to smuggle the drug benzylpiperazine (BZP) into the United States through the Truck Crossing in Blaine.
Krista Edwards, 23, of North Vancouver, B.C., had hidden more than $1 million of the drug in her SUV, said U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Chief Thomas Schreiber.
“What they found was a very sophisticated secret compartment in the back of a Ford Explorer, and when they were able to open that, they found a hundred-thousand tablets of BZP,” said Schreiber.
The compartment was built into the cargo area and opened by a hidden electrical switch, he said.
“It’s a mimicked drug of Ecstasy. It’s made with compounds that I’m told are legal to obtain in Canada,” Schreiber said.
BZP was originally used as a worming treatment for cattle.
