Intalco May Keep Operating With Power Deal

FERNDALE, Wash. -- Officials at Alcoa report that they’ve reached a tentative deal with the Bonneville Power Administration that will allow the Intalco aluminum smelter near Ferndale to operate for at least a year and a half.

"We feel that the football has been teed up for us many times over the last 9 months only to be pulled back, so I think there's a little sense of relief, we can see the finish line," said Intalco plant manager Mike Roseau.

The draft proposal will be the subject of public hearings and possible law suits before it’s adopted.

According to Alcoa, BPA has agreed to provide the plant with enough power to operate at a little less than two-thirds capacity for 19 months.

The deal could be extended for five additional years, but Alcoa officials said the company would have to jump through some hoops to make it happen.
