McAuley, Walker Lead In Port Of Bellingham Races

kgmi@kgmi.com

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The challenger has a big lead over the incumbent for a Port of Bellingham Commission seat.

55 percent of voters are supporting Mike McAuley.

Doug Smith has 45 percent of the vote.

“I’m pretty happy. I think the numbers are showing that the people weren’t really happy with what’s going on at the Port of Bellingham,” McAuley said Tuesday.

“I’m excited to sort of put into practice what I’ve been talking about,” he said.

It’s a different story in the other Port Commission contest.

Incumbent Scott Walker is the leader over challenger John Blethen.

The top project right now is related to the air, not the sea, said Walker.

“The biggest project we have on board is to do the big expansion at the airport,”

Walker leads with 52 percent compared to Blethen’s 48 percent.

“Of course there’s still other votes to come in, but it’s gratifying to see where I am right now,” he said Tuesday.
