BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Early returns show voters soundly defeating state Initiative 1033, which would limit government revenue.
The Tim Eyman initiative is losing 56 percent to 44 percent.
The opposition campaign included elected officials, labor unions and big business.
Locally, Bellingham mayor Dan Pike was a vocal critic .
“I think it shows that the voters heard the message about what the true impacts of 1033 would be,” said Pike Tuesday.
Pike joined several other Whatcom County mayors in opposing the measure.
“It means that we’ll be able to climb out of the recession that we’re in in better shape than we would have, had it passed,” he said.
The measure is needed to make sure city, county and state governments grow at a sustainable rate coming out of the recession, said Eyman.
