New Count of Ballots Show Some Races Too Close to Call

kgmi@kgmi.com

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. -- No lead changes, but another count of ballots Wednesday show some races remain extremely close.

Just 631 votes separate the leader Dan McShane from Kathy Kershner in a Whatcom County Council contest.

Western Washington University Political Science Professor Todd Donovan said this shouldn’t surprise people.

"It kind of looks like the last few county council elections we've had where there's a bunch of 52-48 races," Donovan said.

It’s still passing, but the gap between “yes” and “no” is just 366 votes for the Whatcom County Library System’s property tax increase.

In one Ferndale City Council race, Ken Downey has just five more votes than Jon Mutchler and in another race, Keith Olson is ahead of Brent Goodrich by three votes.

The first numbers for Bellingham City Council write-in candidate Orphalee Smith are out.

She’s received 2061 votes, but trails Seth Fleetwood 83 to 17 percent.

More results will be released Thursday.
