BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Whatcom Middle School is the oldest school building in the Bellingham School District, so a lot of history was lost when the building burned Thursday morning.
The school was founded in 1903, meaning generations of students have walked the halls of Whatcom.
Many parents and students headed out to the school before dawn this morning to watch as the fire burned out of control for several hours.
It was emotional for both young and old.
Whatcom Middle School students said they are anxiously waiting to hear what happens next.
This year alone 580 students enrolled, but the number of memories is impossible to count.
Awards organizer: "I don’t think there’s ever been a more important time to recognize, honor and encourage businesses and business people for what they do.”
