Fire Investigation Continues at Whatcom Middle School

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Bellingham fire investigators are now working to determine the cause of Thursday’s inferno at Whatcom Middle School.

"The City is committed to working with the school district in managing essentially what is a community wide disaster," Bellingham Fire Chief Bill Boyd said.

The building was undergoing a seismic retrofit. Workers, including welders, were up on the roof Wednesday night.

The fire engulfed the entire roof of the building and caused heavy damage to the third floor.

"Our goal from the get-go was to not let the fire burn down to the first floor," said Boyd.

He said firefighters saved the school's gym. Nobody was hurt in the blaze.

A team from the Bellingham Fire and Police Departments are conducting the investigation.
