Samish Way Urban Village Gets Green Light

kgmi@kgmi.com

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The Bellingham City Council has approved plans for a new Samish Way Urban Village.

Zoning and other regulations are being changed in the Samish Way area of the city to allow for a dense, pedestrian friendly mix of homes and businesses.

"The proposal is to create an urban village in the proximity of Samish Way, generally located north of Bill McDonald Parkway and west of I-5," said Bellingham City Council member Terry Bornemann.

By creating affordable housing and making environmentally friendly spaces within the urban village, developers will earn the ability to build more than what would normally be allowed on a piece of property.

Paying to help protect Lake Whatcom would also allow denser development.
