Voters to Decide WTA Future on Spring Ballot

Tracy@kgmi.com

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. -- Whatcom County voters will have the opportunity to decide on whether to increase sales taxes to pay for local bus service.

Whatcom Transportation Authority buses will continue to operate at current levels until at least April of 2010.

WTA spokesperson Maureen McCarthy said April is when citizens will be able to vote on a proposed 0.2 percent tax increase.

The board decided Thursday to put the tax increase proposal on next year’s spring ballot.

If voters approve the measure, WTA won’t have to make any dramatic cuts to service.

If it fails, McCarthy said routes and more will likely be eliminated.
