County Approves Animal Control Contract

kgmi@kgmi.com

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Citing concerns about the cost of service, some Whatcom County council members were considering not approving an animal control contract with the Whatcom Humane Society, but the agreement was ultimately accepted Tuesday night.

Several people spoke in favor of the Humane Society providing the service.

The county administration negotiated a $453,000 contract with the Humane Society for next year.

That’s $52,000 less than this year’s contract, but the Humane Society said it can handle the reduction without making cuts in service.

At one point, it looked like council members Sam Crawford, Ward Nelson, Bob Kelly and Barbara Brenner would vote against the pact, but it ended up being approved unanimously.
