State Senator Dale Brandland Will Not Seek Re-election

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- A Bellingham lawmaker is calling it a career.

State Senator Dale Brandland announced Wednesday that he will not seek a third term in Olympia this fall.

In a speech on the senate floor, the former Whatcom County Sheriff said “it has been a privilege to represent the people of the 42nd district.”

This is Brandland last month giving emotional testimony on legislation related to the four Lakewood police officers who were killed late last year:

“I went through one of these things a few years ago… September 13th, 2001... lost a young man named Matt Herzog.”

Brandland said he and his family have agreed that the time is right to step aside.

Brandland was elected to the senate in 2002 after serving ten year as sheriff.

Brandland said he now plans to spend time with his wife Jean, two children and seven grandchildren.
