WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. -- More than a dozen Whatcom County residents spoke out Tuesday night on rules restricting wind turbines.
The Whatcom County Council last month put an emergency moratorium on new applications for large wind turbines.
The council was responding to Squalicum Mountain residents concerned over plans for a large commercial wind project there.
“We need to consider the negative impacts that they’re going to have on people,” a wind critic said.
“Once energy facilities are cited, it will be very hard to change,” said another.
But, those opposed to wind turbines were matched by an equal number of people welcoming the idea.
“Alternative energy is definitely an exciting thing that we need to work toward,” a wind supporter said.
“I think we have a case of the NIMBYs,” said another supporter.
Council members Barbara Brenner and Ken Mann said they’ll work together on crafting an interim moratorium to take over after the 60-day emergency measure expires.
