BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A Bellingham couple are among local residents welcoming Afghan refugees to a new home.

Dusty Gulleson and his wife bought a duplex and are renovating it for families fleeing the war-torn country.

He tells KING 5 that they feel it’s their calling as Christians.

“What we’re trying to do is at least give them a stable home for at least three years. I think that’s what our goal is,” says Gulleson. “Get on their feet, get climatized. There’s a lot of change, obviously, for them.”

About 75 refugees from Afghanistan and other countries will soon resettle in Whatcom County.

They’re among about 2400 coming to Western Washington.

The Whatcom Refugee Resettlement Project is looking for host families to take refugees in.
